Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Release
But, a segment of conservative commentators and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But a few are not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Response
Clinton has consistently said he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a law requiring the files' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical folders of materials that contained little new information.
